When the Pump Does Not Start
The float switch responds to the water level and tells the pump when to run. A restricted float, an electrical supply problem or a failed component can leave water in the pit. These possibilities require different repairs; the symptom alone does not establish that the whole unit is finished.
Keep away from water that may contact electrical equipment. You do not need to reach into the pit or handle a cord to request help.

Assess a Pump That Does Not Respond
When the pit fills and the pump remains silent, the power supply, float control and pump can each be relevant. The float normally responds to changing water level; a control that cannot move or signal properly can leave water unremoved even if the motor is otherwise serviceable. Those possibilities call for assessment rather than an immediate replacement decision.
Report whether water is still contained in the pit or has escaped, and keep clear of wet electrical connections. You do not need to reach into the basin or reproduce the fault to describe it.
